The Gist was formed in 1999, shortly after the release of One Hand Tied. It was Sarah B, Doug Schram (bass) and Scott Fishman (percussion). The Gist played all over Chicago, as well as in Indianapolis and NYC and recorded the CD Wild Ride.

Doug Schram: Bass

Doug came to Chicago from Kalamazoo, MI, where he picked up the bass at age fifteen. But, says Doug, "it didn't really start to sound good till I got an amp". Doug is a visual artist as well as a musician. He admires the work of King Crimson and Bella Fleck and the Flecktones as well as "anyone with a good bass player". He cut his hair in 03? and moved to Albuquerque in 04.

There should be a link to Doug here, right?

Scott Fishman, Percussion

Scott got his musical start on Tupperware at some pre-verbal age and has been a lifelong musician, securing his first drum set with paper route money. He has played the Messiah at Orchestra Hall and once donned a kilt to become "the only (kilted) Jewish guy in the marching band at the Scottish festival". He wore out Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle album (on vinyl, of course) playing along in his family's basement. He is quick to thank his family for all the support they've given him over the years. His musical role models include Ringo, Buddy Rich and Carl Palmer. Scott has also played with such Chicago area bands as Sonic Congress and the White Boys Blues Band. He's now the proud father of two.

Paul Emersun, Guitar

Guitarist, bassist, songwriter. Paul has scored local radio commercials and a CBS Television Sports Feature. He has performed as part of Columbia College's "Music Alive" program, and throughout the Midwest with various local touring acts. He is a former wedding band jobber who now loves working with original bands and as a session guitarist/vocalist with local songwriters. Paul plays on Angel Fly, and does that amazing Santana-channeling thing on Listen.

Matt just won't give me a picture and I haven't had a chance to sneak one. He's cute, for a boy.

Matt Grosspietsch, Guitar

Some of you may remember that Matt played bass on One Hand Tied, and performed live at the OHT CD release party and a couple of subsequent gigs. I was thrilled to be able to get him to come into the studio and record both lead & rhythm guitars on Paper Boats.

Nathan Syfrig, keyboard & violin

Nathan has worked with a variety of bands around Chicago, including the Ethan Sellers Band and Tautologic, and more recently Digable Cat. You can find his keyboard work on Sun Don't Care & All I Said; his violin graces 24-7 (yes, there's a violin in there) Keeping the Peace (no, that's not an electric guitar) August River Blues, Petals from a Rose, and Wild Ride.

Gary Yek

Engineering, Production & Percussion

In addition to being a great engineer, Yek (center) happens to be a kickass drummer. He plays with us on Angel Fly, Keeping the Peace, Petals from a Rose, and Wild Ride. He was also exceedingly patient with Bill's and my antics, and even occasionally amused.

Gary refuses to get his own website, but google "Electric Garyland Studios"
