Pendulums swing; backlashes beget backlashes. 

How bad it gets depends on what the people will allow. Here’s what we know:

When the commie hippie socialist dumbocrat tree huggers finally regain control of the government, climate change and sexual assault will replace immigration and trans bathrooms as the issues du jour.  (Universal health care sold separately.)

Based on recent data, it seems we’ll allow the EPA to have its own enforcement arm, who do not need either military or police training and may not appreciate the nuances of the Bill of Rights. Their leadership will consist of pardoned perpetrators of previous acts of environmental terrorism. They will be empowered to stop you on the road, drag you out of your vehicle, beat and handcuff you, and take you to an undisclosed location without access to a phone, medical care or an attorney.  Your vehicle and its contents may be destroyed without notice to creditors or satisfaction of your debt. Children in your vehicle may be sent to another prison or placed in foster care. They can do all this with our blessing if you are suspected of driving a vehicle that has not passed an emissions test. It’s the law, after all. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.

Prior legal precedents will allow the use of race- and gender-based profiling for crimes including sexual assault, but now it will be based on actual crime data. So white males can be stopped anytime by enforcers (or people claiming to be enforcers, since they’re not required to show ID). In sexual assault enforcement actions, all males may be stopped, frisked and questioned. We might agree to make it only males over 12, with the understanding that enforcers are human and mistakes happen.

There will be people who protest these enforcement actions. Some of them will get arrested, beaten or shot; people on screens will say they deserved it. Most people won’t think it’s right. They will post about it, or share. They will say they didn’t know what else to do.
